Hello, this is Kobayashi.
A typhoon, an unexpected injury and hospital visit, the Naoshima Photography Study Group, and an exhibition event.
In this week’s edition of Mainichi GRAF (June 2–8, 2026), I’d like to look back on another week spent in Naoshima.

Tuesday, June 2
Due to the typhoon, it has been rainy and windy all day. In Naoshima, even the ferries after 5:00 p.m. were canceled today, and the town has felt unusually quiet this evening.
The wind is quite strong, so I hope it doesn’t cause any damage. The house I live in gets a lot of airflow, and even the glass door in the kitchen next door has been rattling in the wind.
For now, I’m going to bed.

The typhoon passed without causing any major problems. This morning’s news was full of warnings for the Kanto region. Life on an island can be difficult when a typhoon approaches, because ferries stop running and it’s impossible to travel back and forth to the mainland.
Fortunately, the guests staying at the hotel were able to leave the island safely.
After work, I went grocery shopping. I’ve been feeling unusually unwell lately (the whiplash injury probably isn’t helping), so I’ve decided to improve my diet.
For now, I explained my situation to Gemini, and it suggested eating more vegetables and cutting back on carbohydrates at dinner. So I followed its advice and filled my basket accordingly.
Tonight’s dinner is a salad with natto and kimchi.

Thursday, June 4
I injured my foot and had to make an unexpected trip to a hospital in Uno, Okayama.
After taking a nap because I was tired, I accidentally slammed the little toe on my left foot into a pillar. The impact was so hard that part of my toenail came off. It swelled up badly, and I couldn’t even put on my shoes. I was worried that I might have broken it.
Fortunately, the X-ray showed that the bone was fine. I’m grateful for my surprisingly sturdy bones.
It was actually nice to walk through Uno again. The quiet, slightly faded atmosphere of the town felt comforting in a way. But my foot was hurting, so I headed back to Naoshima fairly quickly.
Looks like I won’t be able to enjoy my evening walks for a while.

Friday, June 5
Somehow, it was another quiet day today. One of the museums is currently closed for an exhibition change, which probably adds to the calm atmosphere.
By the way, we had an editorial meeting for the Naoshima Photography Study Group last night. As the culmination of our activities so far, we’re planning to create a booklet featuring contributions from the participating members.
The editorial team is currently working hard on the project in preparation for the autumn publication deadline. People of different generations who are connected to the island will be taking part, and I’m already looking forward to it.

Saturday, June 6
It’s the weekend, but somehow it feels like a quiet one. As you can see, even the street in front of my house was pretty empty on my way home from work.
Being busy all the time is exhausting, but taking it easy doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get tired either. After getting home, I ended up taking a short nap.
Ten years ago, I could get by with very little sleep and still feel perfectly fine. Lately, though, I’ve been feeling my age more and more. I think I’m actually in better physical shape now than I was back then, but somehow it’s not quite the same.

Sunday, June 7
It was rainy and windy from the morning today. The passenger ferry to Teshima was canceled due to the weather.
Most of our guests had checked in by around noon, so I spent the afternoon back at the staff housing, cleaning the air conditioner and making some safety improvements to the staircase to help prevent accidents.
To be honest, I sometimes enjoy this kind of hands-on work more than desk work or customer service. There’s something satisfying about moving my body and working on practical tasks.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about my future and what kind of work I want to do going forward.

Monday, June 8
Today was the event day for my exhibition at the Art Island Center.
A group of local women from the island, many of whom have always been supportive of my work, gathered for the occasion. I had the opportunity to speak openly about my journey—from how I got started to where my photography is today.
It felt surprisingly refreshing to have these conversations over tea instead of over drinks, which is usually how they happen. It made me realize that there are some things that are difficult to fully express when alcohol is involved.
Maybe that’s why gatherings like this are so valuable from time to time.
I hope we can get together again and continue these conversations through photography.
The exhibition here will be on view until June 15. You can also browse books created by members of GRAF.
If you’re in the area, I’d be delighted if you stopped by.
That’s how my week went.
