Hi, Kobayashi here.

Time to take down my exhibition, YAMAYUKI.

It started back in April, and before I knew it, it had been up for five months. Seeing the works come off the walls finally made me realize that it was really over.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to see the exhibition, and to everyone who kept it in mind from afar.

I wonder when I’ll get to have another exhibition.

Went over to Uno to listen to a coworker who needed someone to talk to.

We spent about three hours at an izakaya talking about work, relationships with people, and all sorts of things. It was pretty heavy.

He’s almost a decade older than me, but listening to him made me realize that getting older and gaining experience can bring its own set of problems. Made me think I need to be careful about a few things myself, too.

The second photo is Uno in the evening, seen from the ferry on the way there.

Going back and forth between Naoshima and Uno has completely become part of everyday life.

Spent the day organizing the storage area at work.

I also took another look at the building next to our staff dorm that was apparently calling itself the “Naoshima Museum of Contemporary Art.”

I heard there were complaints from local residents, and the sign painted on the side of the building has since been removed.

Apparently, the place is run by a certain bookstore from Tokyo, but I have a feeling the whole “Naoshima Museum of Contemporary Art” thing is going to be talked about on the island for quite a while.

Small towns can be scary, you know.

Back at the storage area, some of the dorm residents’ personal belongings had somehow made their way in among the work supplies, so out they went.

Leave this kind of stuff alone and somehow it starts multiplying.

Friday, September 18
At night, we’ve started hearing the sounds of festival music coming from the shrine.

The local kids are there every evening practicing for the autumn festival.

Not long ago, I could still go for a walk after work and watch the sunset. Now it gets dark so much earlier.

There’s still a little bit of summer heat left, but autumn is slowly making its way to the island.

We’ve been short-staffed at work, so it’s been hard to get a proper day off lately.

I figured I needed a change of pace, so after work I went for a drink at the bar next door.

That’s where I found out that one of the staff there will be leaving the island this autumn.

A lot of people I know seem to be leaving Naoshima this fall.

Living on an island, there are more hellos and goodbyes than you might expect.

Saturday, September 19
Completely buried in work.

Nothing much else to report.

So instead, here are some things people left behind at work.

A pair of shoes and some sunscreen.

For some reason, on the busiest days, my camera roll always seems to end up full of things like this.

Sunday, September 20
The middle of Silver Week.

The port was more crowded than I’ve seen it in a long time.

Every time a ferry arrived, another wave of people poured onto the island. There was a long line in front of the Red Pumpkin, too.

It almost felt like a completely different island from the one I live on every day.

And strangely enough, seeing so many Japanese visitors felt kind of refreshing.

Monday, September 21
Spent the whole day driving around the island for work.

In the middle of all the Silver Week traffic, I ended up getting into an accident involving visitors and a local resident.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but it was a day that left me thinking about a lot of things.

After work, I sat and watched a fire for a while.

On days like this, just staring into the flames helps calm me down a little.

Tomorrow is another day. Time to reset and keep going…

That’s about it for this week.
