昨日から仕事で湯原温泉に滞在。本日は、その足で蒜山まで足を延ばしてみました。
「西の軽井沢」とも呼ばれている（らしい）この場所は、岡山では珍しく平地が広がる高原リゾート。とても気持ちのいい所です。
写真1枚目のメルヘンチックな洋風建築は「ヒルゼン高原センター・ジョイフルパーク」。バブル期に建てられただけあって、とても豪華。お土産を販売するドライブインと、裏手にある遊園地の入口を兼ねています。後ろに観覧車が少し見えていますね。
道向かいにある蒜山ミュージアムで知人の展示を見た後は、そのまま直島までドライブ。蒜山は岡山県の最北部にあるので、県をほぼ縦断する移動になりました。
途中、野菜の無人販売所を発見。地元の美作でもすっかり見かけなくなりましたが、こういう場所を見ると今でもワクワクします。
立ち寄って、きゅうり3本と蒜山大根、キャベツを一玉購入。野菜は大好きなので、こういう買い物は本当にありがたい。食べるのが楽しみ。

I’ve been staying in Yubara Onsen for work since yesterday. Today, I decided to drive a little farther and visit Hiruzen.
Often called the “Karuizawa of Western Japan,” Hiruzen is a beautiful highland resort with wide open fields—something quite rare in Okayama. It was such a pleasant place to spend the day.
The fairytale-like Western-style building in the first photo is the Hiruzen Kogen Center Joyful Park. Built during Japan’s bubble economy, it’s surprisingly grand. It serves as both a souvenir shop and the entrance to the amusement park behind it. You can even spot part of the Ferris wheel in the background.
After visiting a friend’s exhibition at the Hiruzen Museum across the road, I drove all the way back to Naoshima. Since Hiruzen is located in the northernmost part of Okayama Prefecture, it ended up being almost a drive across the entire prefecture.
On the way home, I found a small roadside stand selling locally grown vegetables. They used to be common in my hometown of Mimasaka, but they’re becoming harder to find these days. Seeing one still makes me excited.
I stopped and bought three cucumbers, a Hiruzen daikon radish, and a whole cabbage. I love vegetables, so finding fresh local produce like this always makes me happy. I can’t wait to eat them!

今朝は職場で撮影の仕事。午後からは画像データの処理。
最近はMacBookのメモリ容量が足りず、なかなか作業が進まない。つい先日、容量を空けたばかりなのに。
事務所のWindows機もドライブがパンパンで、こちらもデータ整理。不明なデータがあり、結局今日は解決できずに明日に持ち越し。データも仕事も溜めたくないね。
仕事終わりは宮浦港を少し散歩。また、そろそろ走らないとな…。定期的に走っていないと、体が忘れてしまう気がする。
夏の宮浦港は、一面にクローバーの花が咲いていて本当にきれい。思わず寝転がりたくなるような景色でした。

This morning, I had a photography job at work, and in the afternoon I spent some time processing image files.
Recently, my MacBook has been running out of memory, so my workflow has slowed down quite a bit. I just freed up some storage the other day, but it’s already filling up again.
The Windows computer at the office was also running out of disk space, so I spent some time organizing the data there as well. I found some files I couldn’t identify, and in the end I couldn’t solve the problem today. I’ll have to continue tomorrow. I don’t like letting either data or work pile up.
After work, I took a short walk around Miyanoura Port. I really need to start running again. If I don’t run regularly, it feels like my body forgets how.
In summer, Miyanoura Port is covered with blooming clover flowers. It was such a beautiful view that it made me want to lie down and relax for a while.

今日も仕事終わりに、直島・宮浦港周辺を散歩。 気分を変えて町中を歩いていると、知人にばったり会って立ち話になったり。
まだまだよそ者、新参者の僕ですが、少しずつ地域の人たちに受け入れてもらえているような気がします。
焼杉の壁が並ぶ町並みも、今ではすっかり馴染みの風景になりました。
July 9 – Thursday
After work today, I took another walk around Miyanoura Port on Naoshima.
I decided to take a different route through town for a change, and happened to run into a friend. We stopped and chatted for a while.
I’m still an outsider and a newcomer here, but little by little, I feel like I’m being accepted by the local community.
The streets lined with traditional yakisugi (charred cedar) walls have now become a familiar part of my everyday scenery.

正確には11日の早朝ですが、夜勤明けなので、まだ気分は10日。
まだ朝7時ですが、眩しい日差しと高い気温に、夏の訪れを感じます。
ひとまず、少し仮眠をとろう。

Technically, it’s already the early morning of the 11th, but since I’ve just finished my night shift, it still feels like the 10th to me.
It’s only 7 a.m., yet the bright sunshine and rising temperature already make it feel like summer.
For now, I think I’ll take a little nap.

仕事終わり、宮浦港を少し散策。
今日はやたら人が多いなと思ったら、そうか、週末でした。
堤防では海外からの旅行客を中心に、夕日を眺めたり、お酒を飲みながら語り合ったり。そんな楽しげな光景を見ていると、こちらまで少し気分が上がってきます。
日中の暑さも夕方には少し和らぎ、潮風を感じながらのんびり過ごすには最高のひとときでした。今や直島の良き風景のひとつですね。
July 11 – Saturday
After work, I took a short walk around Miyanoura Port.
I wondered why there were so many people today… then I realized—it was the weekend.
Along the breakwater, many international visitors were watching the sunset, sharing drinks, and enjoying conversations together. Seeing such a lively scene lifted my spirits as well.
By early evening, the day’s heat had eased, and it was the perfect time to relax while enjoying the sea breeze.
I think this has become one of Naoshima’s most beautiful everyday scenes.

今夜は英語のレッスンがあるので、夕方の散歩は少しだけ。
今日は大槌島がいつもより少し大きく見える気がします。なんでだろう。浮島現象だろうか？
ちなみに、大槌島は、そのきれいな三角形の形から「おむすび島」や「さんかく島」とも呼ばれています。瀬戸内海に浮かぶ無人島のひとつですが、「大槌神社」があり、海の安全を守る神様が祀られているそうです。
さらに面白いのが、この島の真ん中には岡山県と香川県の県境が通っていること。北側は岡山県玉野市、南側は香川県高松市に属しています。
江戸時代には、備前と讃岐の漁師たちの間で激しい漁業権争いが起こり、幕府の裁定によって「島を真ん中で二つに分ける」ことになり、その境界線がそのまま現在の県境になっています。
そして、その裁定を下したのが、実はあの有名な大岡越前だとか。
「これにて一件落着」……したのかな。
あ、それは遠山の金さんの決めセリフでした。

I have an English lesson tonight, so I only took a short walk this evening.
For some reason, Ōzuchi Island looked a little larger than usual today. I wonder why. Maybe it was a superior mirage.
By the way, Ōzuchi Island is also known as “Onigiri Island“ or “Triangle Island” because of its beautiful triangular shape. It’s one of the many uninhabited islands in the Seto Inland Sea and is home to Ōzuchi Shrine, where a deity believed to protect those at sea is enshrined.
What’s even more interesting is that the border between Okayama Prefecture and Kagawa Prefecture runs right through the middle of the island. The northern half belongs to Tamano City in Okayama, while the southern half belongs to Takamatsu City in Kagawa.
During the Edo period, fishermen from Bizen and Sanuki fought over fishing rights around the island. The Tokugawa shogunate eventually settled the dispute by dividing the island in half, and that boundary remains the prefectural border to this day.
And the person said to have made that decision was none other than the famous Ōoka Echizen.
“So, the case was finally settled…”
…or was it?
Oh wait—that was actually Tōyama no Kin-san’s famous catchphrase.

住んでいる寮から見える宮浦の景色。今日もきれいな夕焼けが見られそうです。
今の寮に住み始めて2年。最近でこそ運動を兼ねて夕日を見に行くようになりましたが、思えば1年前までは、宮浦の夕景をそれほど意識することもありませんでした。
どんなに素晴らしいものでも、それが当たり前になってしまうと、人はその価値を見失ってしまうものなのかもしれません。最近は、その美しさを噛み締めながら日々を過ごしています。
この感覚も、いつかまた当たり前になり、別の何かに塗り替えられてしまうのかもしれない。それでも、その時々の「当たり前」を大切にしながら暮らしていけたらと思っています。

July 13 – Monday
The view of Miyanoura from the dormitory where I live. It looks like we’ll have another beautiful sunset today.
I’ve been living here for two years now. These days, I often go out to watch the sunset as part of my daily exercise, but thinking back, I hardly paid any attention to Miyanoura’s evening scenery even a year ago.
No matter how beautiful something is, once it becomes part of everyday life, perhaps we begin to lose sight of its value. Lately, I’ve been spending my days appreciating that beauty a little more deeply.
Maybe this feeling, too, will someday become ordinary again, replaced by something else. Even so, I hope I can keep living while cherishing whatever feels “ordinary” in each moment.
That’s about how this week went.
